Set, Ceili, and Ballroom Dancing

Yes, I know that this is a Celtic music site, but much of the Celtic culture is reflected in the dancing.  For me, the music and the dance are pretty much symbiotic, and you can not have one without the other - besides, I feel that to really understand much of the music, you must really dance to it. That adds a completely new perspective to the music.

Why the other dance forms?  If you look at the styles and the music, you will find that there is a relationship between them. Besides, it's all good, and I enjoy it all!

Set and Ceili Dancing:  These are the Irish traditional 'social' dance forms.  Set dancing typically consists of four couples (a 'set'), dancing several predefined patterns or 'figures'.  Ceili dancing is geared more to larger groups (often only limited by the space available) of dancers.  The figure will generally be repeated throughout the entire dance.

A good Set and Ceili dance resource is Set Dancing News - an online Irish dance news letter by Bill Lynch. It lists dancing all over the world, and many other things besides. Check it out!

Step Dancing:  This is the most recognized form of Irish dancing, recently made popular by such stage shows 'Riverdance' and 'Lord of the Dance'.  It is more of a exhibition and competition dance form, rather than a social dance.  Both Irish and Scots practice this form as well.

Scottish Country Dancing:
This is the Scottish traditional dance, sort of a merging of ceili dancing and ballroom dancing.  For more information please check the San Francisco RSCDS web site.

Highland Dancing: Sorry, I'm still looking for information on this.

Scandi Dancing:  Scandinavian dancing in the bay area.  I've never been to one, but my friends all say it's a blast!

Ballroom Dancing:  There is lots of good Ballroom dancing here in the Bay Area.  Check it all out, you will be glad that you did!

Contra Dancing:  Similar to Ceili dancing, lot's of fun. Try BACDS for more info.
